Chalfont Wasps 3-2 Milton United
Saturday 30th March
What this match lacked in quality was countered by a thrilling second half as the match swung in the favour of both sides. The chilly snow flurried afternoon threatened once again to thwart matters, the home game earlier in the season was abandoned and the away fixture cancelled last week. Wasps now travel to Milton for the final re-arranged match of the season.
Wasps started much the brighter, with Connor Cumber’s unconventional style on the left flank providing much of the threat. Cumber got Wasps first with an excellent long range effort. After driving down the line for the umpteenth time, Cumber powered a looping shot from the angle from 32 yards which evaded the visiting keeper; 1-0 Wasps after 5 minutes. Wasps were unlucky not to add to their tally during the next 10 minutes. The match then swung in Milton’s favour, they got control of mid-field and put Wasps on the back foot. During this spell Wasps failed to clear a free kick and Steve Andrews netted the first of his brace from close range; 1-1 17 mins. Milton then hit the post, although Wasps keeper Frank Turner looked to have it covered, and moments later Turner then smothered a long range effort to keep the scores level. However, a mix up between the usually very reliable Turner and Steve Nott-Macaire then allowed Andrews to bag an easy second; 1-2 on the half hour mark. Wasps showed some signs of the second half revival in the last few minutes and Mark Stack collected a Cumber cross and neatly slotted home from the angle, sadly the effort was adjudged off side and Wasps trailed at the interval. Turner tipped a looping effort over just before half time.
Wasps were more competitive in the second period and earned the right to have the lion's share of events. Cumber shot over after a bad ‘bobble’, Fred Tripp was inches short of converting a Tom Seddon cross and Cumber headed firmly at the keeper before they drew level and then quickly took the lead. Chris Shennan rose highest from a Cumber corner to head home a firmly to level matters after 82 minutes. From the restart Wasps moved the ball forward well and Tripp finished off the move to give Wasps the winning margin after 83 minutes. Milton applied some pressure during the final few minutes but Wasps stood firm to bag all three points.
